Short version: if you own your home and have a standard door, start with the Schlage Encode. If you rent, look at the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock, which keeps your current lock and keys. If you use Apple Home or have a thick door, look at the Yale Assure Lock 2. If you want Apple Home Key, look at the Aqara U100. If you want Matter by name, look at the ULTRALOQ Bolt SE.
One thing to know up front. Owner feedback on every WiFi lock we read includes complaints about battery life and dropped connections. None of these is trouble free. Keep a key somewhere safe.

Skip it if you want a keypad on the door, because the keypad is sold separately. Skip it if your deadbolt sticks, because a small motor has to turn it.

Do these three things before you install
- Lock and unlock your current deadbolt with the door closed. If you have to push or pull the door to make it turn, fix that first. A motor cannot push the door for you.
- Take a photo of your old lock from both sides and keep all the parts in a bag. Renters will need them on move-out day.
- Set up one code or fingerprint and test it ten times with the door open. Only then close the door.
