Will a smart lock fit my door?

You need three numbers and a tape measure. Most US home doors are 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches thick, with a backset of 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches and a 2-1/8 inch hole. If your door matches, most smart deadbolts will go on with a screwdriver. If it does not, find out now, not after the box is open.
Will a smart deadbolt fit my door?
A general check against common US door sizes and the thickness ranges on the listings we read. It is not a promise of fit. Confirm every number on the listing and in the maker's manual before you order.
How to measure
- Door thickness. Open the door and measure the edge, front face to back face.
- Backset. Measure from the edge of the door to the center of the deadbolt hole. It will be close to 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches.
- Bore hole. Take the old deadbolt off, or look at the maker's template, and measure across the big round hole in the door face.

Look at the first two rows. A thin 1-3/8 inch door is inside the Schlage range and outside the Yale range. A 2 inch door is the other way around. This is why you measure first. One more wrinkle: Yale's own support page lists the Assure Lock 2 family for doors 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inches thick, wider than the Amazon listing. The check nobody does: does the bolt throw freely?
Close the door and turn your current deadbolt with two fingers. It should slide all the way out without rubbing. If you have to lean on the door, the hole in the frame is out of line. A smart lock uses a small motor to do this job. A dragging bolt can cause jams, "failed to lock" alerts and fast battery drain. Fixing the strike plate first is often a small job with a file or a screwdriver.
Other things that block a fit
- A handle or a storm door too close to the deadbolt.
- Raised trim or glass right next to the lock on the inside. The inside part of a smart lock is bigger than a thumb turn.
- A double cylinder deadbolt, the kind with a key on both sides. Retrofit locks like the August are made for single cylinder deadbolts.
